Satyamev Jayete

Dr Ambedkar's name censored from Satyamev Jayate?

Though people from Dalit community have praised the actor for bringing up the untouchability issue into public notice through his show 'Satyamev Jayate' but at the same time they have also accused Khan of being used as a 'pawn' to publicise the show and hide the real heroes of India's true history.

THE SHOW focused on many Dalit community-related issues like untouchability and manual scavenging through various case studies. However, experts on Dalit issues like Dr. Vivek Kumar, who is Associate Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre for the Study of Social Systems has accused the show for deliberately ignoring the name of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

On account of his post show discussion with the various participants, whose case studies have been aired on Satyamev Jayate's episode on the issues of the community, Professor Kumar said that the show has edited those portions from the show where the participants have taken the name Dr. Ambedkar.

"The show did not mention the name of Dr. Ambedkar for even once. I talked to all the people (participants), all of them said that they took the name (of Dr. Ambedkar) but it has been edited. I spoke to Dr. Kaushal Panwar, Satlin K, Bezwada Wilson, Bhagwant Prasad. You can very well imagine that people don't want...You are trying to organize an issue which is very dear to the hearts of the people and you are doing this. That means it was a deliberate attempt. And the deliberate attempt came out next day with the Gandhian perspective when Aamir Khan wrote an article for a newspaper. I don't know how much accumen he has to write the article. This is the way people are trying to play with the feelings of masses,” Dr. Vivek Kumar told this citizen journalist."

Dr. Panwar whose case study was aired on the show said that the show should have mentioned the name of Dr. Ambedkar in the wake of his struggle for Dalit rights. Dr. Panwar said that she had taken the name of Dr. Ambedkar but it had not been shown.

“I have taken the name of Dr. Ambedkar on the show. But it was not aired. I too feel that the show should have mentioned the various works done by Dr. Ambedkar for Dalit rights. The episode would have become more effective and people especially the dalit community would have loved it more,” added Dr. Panwar.

Not only the experts on Dalit issues or the participants missed Dr. Ambedkar from the show, but the viewers who saw the show also found him missing from the show. This was evident from the various responses to an article that Aamir Khan wrote after the telecast of the show for English daily The Hindu. In the article while discussing the issues related with Dalit community and measures to be taken to bring equality in society the film actor has mentioned Mahatma Gandhi who worked to abolish untouchability from the social system.

Commenting on the article, Dr. Param Anand wrote that the show Satyamev Jayate hides the name of Dr. Ambedkar who fought for the rights of dalits.“Amir Khan is used as pawn to publicize the show and thereby to hide the real heroes of India's true history. The episode on untouchability is cleverly hidden the greatest pioneer of India's freedom struggle as well as the equality and upliftment of India as whole i.e. Dr Ambedkar. This has clearly proved that this show is created by vested interests,” Dr Anand wrote.

Criticising Khan, Dr Deodatt M Suryawanshi wrote that the way Aamir khan portrayed Mahatma Gandhi as the sole fighter against untouchability is 'ill informed and not without caste prejudices'.

“Gandhi was himself supporter of Chaturvarna which claimed to be an ideal Hindu society. He may have campaigned against untouchability but he opposed privileges for the oppressed by fasting against the communal award. There are many instances, where he has opposed the political emancipation of the depressed classes. Spiritual emancipation had no meaning without political emancipation which was based on equal rights and priviliges. If anyone deserves the credit of annhilating the caste and destroying untouchability is Dr Ambedkar and his mentor Mahatma Jyotiroa Phule with Shahu Maharaj. It is Just because of them that the depressed classes live with dignity and respect today,” Dr Deodatt's comment read.
